The news industry was left stunned as Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon were both fired from their positions at major networks within an hour of each other. Carlson, a 25-year veteran of mainstream news, hosted the top-rated primetime program on television, averaging over three million viewers every night. Despite his large audience, Carlson had been the centre of controversy surrounding his on-air comments, which led to advertisers pulling ads and advocacy groups demanding his replacement. His dismissal from Fox News came after the network agreed to pay $787.5 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle a defamation lawsuit that Carlson was accused of contributing to. Fox News has stated they will use a rotating host before finding a permanent replacement for Carlson.

Meanwhile, Lemon had been with CNN for 17 years before his sudden departure. CNN has stated that his statement about the events leading up to his termination were inaccurate and that he was offered an opportunity to meet with management. His departure is seen as more of a programming challenge for CNN, as they try to build a new morning program and fill a critical primetime slot at 9 pm.

Andrew Heyward, former President of CBS News, commented that Carlson’s departure presents both a political and programming challenge for Fox News, as Carlson’s opinions and audience were significant factors in their viewership. Lemon’s departure is largely seen as a programming challenge for CNN, as they navigate how to rebuild their line-up without his contributions.
