Preference is a good thing

It is good that we have preferences, if we all preferred the same things there would be a lot of things neglected. Lawns with no weeds, beautiful green grass and beautiful weed free flowerbeds are something I enjoy seeing and have been in awe at the beauty of some.

But as for me I prefer my yard to be a haven for wildlife. It is rare I can look out my window any time of the day and not see some wildlife activity going on. I have loved animals all my life, both wild and tame.

One of the three rabbits that stay at my place. Mama and baby are usually out in the evening hopping around looking for their favorite grass. This the other one that comes out in the afternoon to eat. I don’t know if it is male or female.

The squirrels are good at keeping me entertained. They are so smart and funny and even mischievous at times. It amazes me how they know exactly where they buried acorns to get them through the winter. This one is digging up an acorn under the oak tree.

There are many birds at my place and they have no problem finding plenty to eat. This Northern Flicker is most likely looking for ants since they make up almost half of their diet. They like suet so I see them at the suet feeder quite often.

These little finches like the majority of the other birds at my place prefer to have their meals ready to eat, so they head for one of the several bird feeders that has their favorite seed.

Watching all the wonderful wildlife in my yard and keeping the feeders filled was a real blessing during the year I was home bound because of the pandemic. They kept me busy and still do…busy is good.

  1. I love the squirrels and birds that come to our yard. I put out a cup of seeds and nuts every morning to feed them. My neighbor to the north feeds the birds, the neighbor to the south feeds the hummingbirds. Makes for a lovely neighborhood.

  2. Wildlife is wonderful! It’s time for the migrating birds to come to our area so this weekend I am putting out the hummingbird feeders and oriole feeders. We keep the outer edges of our property natural for the critters then like you, they come to the feeders in our yard to eat from our feeders. Your flicker is beautiful and so are your pictures. Thank you for sharing them with us.
